The sun had already started to set when I woke up from my impromptu nap. A quick glance at the clock above the bookcase told me I had maybe less than an hour before Deacon would be home. That should be enough time to throw together some spaghetti.

I wasn’t the greatest cook in the world, but I wasn’t bad either. I was decent. Before the cancer took her, my foster mom tried to teach me everything she knew in the kitchen. I was pretty sure it was because that was the only time I wasn’t fidgeting or my imagination wasn’t running wild. It was the one time everything slowed down and I could focus.

I used to have dreams of being a baker and opening my own bakery or café one day. Those dreams died alongside her. With no one to teach me or encourage me, there was no point in holding on to them, a fact that was cemented in stone when I found myself living on the streets at sixteen. There was no way I could go to culinary school if I’d never finished high school.

I got the meat sauce simmering on the stove and the spaghetti noodles boiling in a pot of water when I decided that I wanted to surprise Deacon with some dessert. The one thing my foster mom could never resist — mostly I think because she taught me how to make them — were my mini banana chocolate chip muffins. What made mine different from hers was that I drizzled caramel sauce over the top of mine after they came out of the oven.

Deacon had everything I needed for the muffins, including ripe bananas in his freezer. I pulled them out and put them in a Ziploc bag, then filled a sink with warm water and submerged the bananas. Hopefully they’d be thawed in time. They should only need five minutes.

I had just put the muffins in the oven when keys jingled in the front door and Deacon entered the apartment. My jaw dropped. The brown Carhartt work pants hugged his ass perfectly, while the white T-shirt stretched across his chest, accentuating his biceps. The light colour didn’t hide his belly, and I loved that. Hard bodies held no appeal for me. I liked to cuddle and not feel like I was snuggled up beside a brick wall. Deacon’s arms were perfect too. He was covered in dust and grime as he toed off his work boots and hung his keys on the hook.

He stopped when he moved further into the living area and caught sight of me in the kitchen. A slow grin tugged at the corners of his lips, and I think I melted. Just a little.

“Dinner’s ready,” I squeaked.

“Awesome. I’m starving. Do you mind if I grab a quick shower first?”

“Not at all. I’ll get everything ready for when you get out.”

His grin turned into a full smile, and he turned for the hallway but stopped and looked back over his shoulder.
